The nation of Comoros is composed of four islands: Mayotte, Anjouan, Moheli, and Grand Comore. Together they became a nation independent of France in 1975. Since independence, Comoros has experienced several coups and political instability. Over the last several election cycles, Comoros has held what were generally ruled to be free and fair elections. Presidential candidates are rotated between the three main islands, with the President serving his term from that post. Each island maintains a local government.
